Who we are and how to reach us
This website is published by The Exertist. There is no company behind the name, no office, and no department that handles this sort of thing except us. Anything about this policy can be sent to info@exertist.com.
What we collect, and from where
We have no accounts, no forms, no comments, no newsletter and nothing to log in to. Nothing you type on this site goes anywhere, because there is nowhere on this site to type. What is collected is collected by three services, listed here in the order in which they meet you.
Cloudflare hosts the site. Every page you load is served by Cloudflare, which keeps a log of the request: your IP address, your browser’s user agent, the address you asked for and how long it took. We turned logging on so that we can find out what broke when something breaks. Cloudflare holds those logs on its own systems for a short period set by Cloudflare, and its handling of them is governed by Cloudflare’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab).
Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits. A small script from Cloudflare runs on every page and reports page views, the page that sent you here, your country and roughly what kind of device you are on. It sets no cookies and does not identify you, which is why we do not ask before running it. It tells us how many people read a piece, and nothing about who they were.
Google Analytics runs only if you say so. If you click “Fine” on the cookie
notice, the page loads Google’s gtag.js, and Google begins reporting to us the same
sort of thing: pages viewed, where visitors came from, how long they stayed, in
aggregate. Google sets cookies to do it and receives the data on its own terms, which
are set out in Google’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab). If you
never click “Fine”, none of this loads, ever, and Google does not hear about you from
us.
That is the list. We do not sell anything we collect, we share it with nobody beyond the two companies named above, and there are no advertising networks on this site. There is nothing to sell, and nobody has asked.
Cookies and the notice
The only cookies this site sets are Google’s, and only after you have clicked “Fine”.
“Absolutely not” sets none. Your answer is kept in your browser’s local storage — not a
cookie — under the name exertist:consent, with no expiry, so that we do not ask you
again. It stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
Changing your mind
There is no button for this. Clear this site’s data in your browser and the notice returns, ready to be answered differently. We know a button would be nicer. We have not built one.
If you write to us, the message stays as an email in our inbox, read by us and answered by us if it seems to want an answer. It is not added to a list, because we do not have a list. If you ask us to delete it, we will, which is the one data-protection request we are fully equipped to handle.
Links to other sites
We link out constantly; most pieces end with a list of sources under the heading Receipts. What those sites collect once you arrive is governed by their policies, not this one, and some of them collect considerably more than we do.
Your rights
You may ask us what we hold about you. The honest answer is: at most, an IP address in a Cloudflare request log that expires on Cloudflare’s schedule, and any email you sent us. Neither analytics service reports to us anything that names you. You may ask us to delete what we hold, which in practice means your emails, and we will. Either request goes to info@exertist.com. We do not name a jurisdiction here: whatever rights the law gives you where you live, you have them, and the email address is the same.
Changes
When something in this policy changes — a new service, a cookie, a button — we change this page and the date at the top of it. We do not send notifications, because we do not have your address, which is rather the point.
